Preservation group seeks parade memories
Waimea Preservation Association will host an open house to display photos and share stories of Waimea Christmas parades of years past. The event is planned for Dec. 1, the same day as the 52nd annual Waimea Christmas Twilight Parade, at Waimea’s tax office at the “county corner,” next to the senior center and Firehouse Gallery.
To share photographs or written stories, contact Pete Hendricks at 885-4453. A volunteer will be present at the association office from 9 a.m. to noon Friday to collect materials. Photos and news clippings can be scanned and immediately returned. Loaned items may also be dropped in the mail slot at the association’s front door — it should include name and contact information, as well as the date taken and any other information about loaned materials.
The association is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving the character and history of Waimea. For more information, visit waimeapreservation.org.
The parade and Waimea’s Big Island Giving Tree project are both coordinated by the Waimea Community Association in partnership with dedicated volunteers and community partners.

Free Snorkel Day
scheduled for Nov. 16
A free Snorkel Day for people with disabilities and their family members is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at Kahaluu Beach Park. Deep and Beyond, along with certified volunteers, will assist people of all ages using adaptive equipment provided by the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Garage sale to benefit feral cat community
AdvoCATS will hold a garage sale Nov. 17 and 18 at 76-6256 Koko Olua Place, off Kupuna Street off lower Lako. Proceeds from the sale will help the group continue its spay and neuter clinics for Hawaii’s homeless and abandoned felines.

Knitting class
offered Saturday
Stephanie Macdonald will teach a beginner knitting class from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Island Yarn and Art Supplies, 73-5568 Olowalu St., Kaloko Light Industrial park. The class will acquaint new knitters with basic techniques while creating a scarf.

N. Kohala library hosts jewelry design program
Jewelry artist Sid Nakamoto will demonstrate a simple jewelry design during a North Kohala Public Library adult and teen craft program slated at 2 and 6 p.m. Nov. 19. Materials will be provided for participants of either session.

The North Kohala Public Library is located adjacent to Takata Grocery Store in Kapaau.
Mr. Bean voted
people’s choice
After nearly 500 votes were counted at the end of the Holualoa Village Coffee and Art Stroll last Saturday, it was Mr. Bean Kona Coffee that was the people’s choice for the second straight year. Second place honors went to Waiaha River Coffee and third place to Greenwell Farms.
Twenty-eight local coffee farms were represented at the 14th annual event in Holualoa, each offering free samples of their homegrown brew to the public in hopes of being chosen the favorite.
Holualoa’s Coffee and Art Stroll is one of the signature events of the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival that continues through Sunday.
Walmart accepting nominations of nonprofits for grants
Walmart is accepting nominations for its 12 Days of Giving through Nov. 18. The campaign recognizes nonprofit organizations making a positive impact on their community. Organizations may be nominated via Walmart’s Facebook page. Winning nonprofits will receive a grant from the Walmart Foundation.

Mitchell to discuss business building
Alex Mitchell, West Hawaii Today advertising consultant, will discuss the “3 W’s of building your business: who are your customers, ways to reach them, and why you need an action plan” on Wednesday. The event is hosted by the Alii Networkers chapter of Business Network International, which meets from noon to 1:30 p.m. upstairs at Island Naturals on Kaiwi Street in Kailua-Kona.
There is no fee to attend, and visitors are welcome.
